Rasta Pasta: The Ultimate Jamaican-Inspired Comfort Food

Rasta Pasta Recipe: A Spicy, Creamy, and Irresistible Dish

What is Rasta Pasta?

Rasta Pasta is a flavorful and colorful dish that combines the calming smoothness of pasta with the strong tastes of Jamaican cooking. With its energetic bell peppers, creamy sauce, and jerk flavor, this meal with a Caribbean flair is a must-try for spice fans. Regardless of your level of familiarity with Rasta Pasta, this detailed recipe will help you make a delicious dish in your own kitchen. A combination of Italian and Caribbean flavors can be found in Rasta Pasta. It was developed in the 1980s by Chef Lorraine Washington for a Rastafarian gathering. Although jerk-seasoned chicken is a chief in the classic recipe, you can use shrimp, tofu, or vegetarian alternatives.

Ingredients

To make this creamy and spicy Rasta Pasta, you’ll need:

For the Pasta:

  • 12 oz penne pasta

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon salt (for boiling water)

For the Protein:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

  • 1 tablespoon jerk seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced

  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced

  • 2 cups heavy cream (or coconut milk for a dairy-free version)

  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

  • 1 teaspoon jerk seasoning (adjust to taste)

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes

  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Step-By-Step Instructions:

Step1:  Prepare the Pasta

Bring a large frying pan of salted water to a boil. Pasta should be added and cooked according to the package's instructions until al dente. Save ½ cup of the pasta water after draining and setting aside.

Step 2: Get the Protein Ready

Slice the chicken into strips and add jerk flavor. In a pan, warm up 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. The chicken should be cooked through and golden brown after 4–5 minutes on each side. If using shrimp, heat until pink, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove from the Pan and set aside.

Step 3: Roast the vegetables

Add two tablespoons of butter to the same pan and melt it over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook until aromatic, about 30 seconds. Add the sliced bell peppers and boil for 3–4 minutes, or until they are crunchy yet gentle.

Step 4: Prepare the Creamy Sauce

Stream in heavy cream (or coconut milk for a dairy-free alternative) after lowering the heat to low. Add the smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, jerk seasoning, and Parmesan cheese and mix. Burn the sauce for two to three minutes to thicken it. To thin out a heavy sauce, add a small amount of the pasta water that was set aside.

Step 5: Put Everything Together

Mix the cooked pasta in the sauce until it is thoroughly coated. Add the cooked chicken back to the pan and mix everything together. In order to combine the flavors, burn it for two more minutes.

Step 6: Garnish and Serve

If preferred, garnish with red pepper flakes and fresh coriander after removing from the fire. Serve hot and taste your amazing, creamy, and spicy Rasta Pasta.
